Steve, like Radio Caroline, lives a few feet from a large expanse of water and owns a boat which consumes huge amounts of his money….!
He's was joint founding director of two commercial ILR stations for 15 years. He’s performed all major ILR air shifts including nearly four years as weekday breakfast presenter.
Growing up on 208 Luxembourg at home and Caroline and RNI when on holiday, he came to radio presentation via the inland pirate route after twenty years on the road as a gigging DJ, on one of Nottingham’s most prestigious and notorious pirates, narrowly avoiding a 'bust' which finished his pirate 'career'.
Along with brother Paul, he managed and licensed around 20 RSL radio broadcasts, including two on AM. He spent a number of years having 60s superstar Dave Berry as a fellow director.
As media spokesman or hired 'talking head', he's appeared on virtually every BBC local station, and BBC Radios 2, 4 and 5 Live and BBC World Service, plus CNN, ITV, Sky, BBC 1 and 2, including five appearances on the legendary BBC 1 TV Breakfast ‘Red Sofa’. International TV appearances include Russian State TV, German TV and the main South Korean TV channel.
He’s written chart – topping books on broadcasting and music and recently curated an exhibition of broadcasting artefacts and ephemera, legal and otherwise, at the behest of Buxton Museum and helped licence an FM drive – in movie service. He presents shows on his local community station in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
He considers the offer of a ‘gig’ on Caroline Flashback one of the greatest accolades of his broadcasting career. 'To very loosely paraphrase Ronan O’ Rahilly,' says Steve, 'I feel like I’ve been asked if I'd like to join The Hollies!'more
